Out-of-Network Isn't Out of Reach

If your therapist doesn't take your insurance, you may still get a significant chunk of the cost back. Most people don't know this.

Here's how out-of-network (OON) benefits work:

Step 1: Check your plan. Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?

  • What's my OON deductible? Have I met it?

  • What percentage do you reimburse after the deductible?

  • Is there a session limit per year?

Step 2: Get a superbill. Your therapist gives you a receipt with diagnosis and billing codes. You submit it to your insurance.

Step 3: Get reimbursed. Many PPO plans pay back 50–80% of what you spent, directly to you.

Real example: You pay your therapist $200/session. Your plan reimburses 70% after deductible. Your actual cost = $60/session. A few apps (Reimbursify, Mentaya) handle the paperwork for you — usually for free or a small fee. It takes 15 minutes to find out what you're entitled to. That phone call could be the difference between keeping your therapist and starting over with someone new.
