Tan Cohen, LCSW

First of all, I understand that this is an important choice for you. Whether you’re new to therapy or not, you deserve to work with someone you can really talk to, that’s the big thing and that’s my wish for you. People come to me when they’re carrying feelings of anxiety, grief, or self-doubt, or when they’re noticing patterns showing up again and again in relationships, work, or in their daily internal life. Maybe you’re asking yourself questions related to your identity, or you’re trying to manage the impact of trauma, or simply wanting a space where the rhythm slows and the volume is turned down a bit. New York is wonderful, but it can do a number on us. Whatever it is that brings you here is yours, it’s meaningful, and it’s valid. That said, there’s no rule that we have to figure everything out on our own.

I work with adults and teens, and much of my clinical experience has been with folks moving through transitions, LGBTQ clients, individuals experiencing substance use challenges, people living with HIV, and students. I use a psychodynamic and relational approach, which means we’ll explore how the past might show up in your life today, while also paying close attention to the here and now. You’re the authority on your own experience and I believe that therapy is a collaboration. Connection is foundational, so we each have a crucial role here. The goal is for us to build a relationship that allows you to fully show up in the room, including the parts that may feel unspoken. It’s a process and there’s no rush.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent years working in creative and community-focused fields. That background taught me the importance of curiosity, flexibility, and seeing people as whole, complicated, and imperfect. I always aim to bring this lens into my clinical work. Whether you’re seeking help, healing, clarity, or just a moment in your week when you can be deeply listened to, I’ll meet you with respect and an honest commitment to building foundations for you to take out into the world, into your unique life.
